Notes A birth registration was found for David Alexander Smith: Year of Registration: 1864; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Liverpool (1837-1934); County: Lancashire; Volume: 8b; Page: 163. (Parents: David Smith and Elizabeth Grierson.)
According to Barnardos, the Smith children were fatherless for 9 years (David Smith was 9 when transported) and that their mother was worried about them being on the streets and ruined. They are listed as having been very poor, ragged and much neglected.
In 1873, on the Hiberian, David Smith, 9 (along with brother, William Smith, 11), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canda, with a group of 74 children from Byrow Hall, Liverpool, en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. (Siblings, James and Ruth Smith, came to Canada in April 1874, via Mrs. Louisa Birt, Byrow Hall, Liverpool.)
David Smith was fortunate to be taken in by a loving family. Born and raised in Liverpool, his father, a sailor, died. His mother was not well and could not handle him and his two siblings. They were placed in the Liverpool Sheltering Home.
