According to Barnardos, the Smith children were fatherless for 9 years (David Smith was 9 when transported) and that their mother was worried about them being on the streets and ruined. They are listed as having been very poor, ragged and much neglected.

In 1874, James Smith, 10 (along with his sister, Ruth Smith, 14), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 67 children from Byrow Hall, Liverpool, England. (Their brothers, David Smith, 9; and William Smith, 11, had arrived in 1873 with a group of 74 children from Byrow Hall, Liverpool, en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on the Hibernian.)

This child is not a member of the Smith family described above. His name does not appear on the 1871 census as being a sibling to Ruth, William and David, all of whom were the children of Elizabeth Grierson Smith. William was my great grandfather.
