According to Barnardos, the Smith children were fatherless for 9 years (David Smith was 9 when transported) and that their mother was worried about them being on the streets and ruined. They are listed as having been very poor, ragged and much neglected.

In 1873, William Smith, 11 (along with brother, David Smith, 9), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canda, with a group of 74 children from Byrow Hall, Liverpool, en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. (Siblings, James and Ruth Smith, came to Canada in April 1874, via Mrs. Louisa Birt, Byrow Hall, Liverpool.)

William was married to Ellen Drysdale and had a daughter, Johanna Smith, who married William James Salter in 1924.

William David Smith died in November, 1899.
