In 1892, Alfred Bentley, 13, arrived at Quebec, along with a group of 85 children from Middlemore Home in Birmingham, England, en route to Macpherson Home in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. (This is an unusual circumstance for Middlemore children to be placed in Stratford, Ontario.)

On January 17, 1912, at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, a marriage was registered between Alfred Bentley, 35, soldier, born in England to John and Maud Mary Bentley; and Mabel Albertha Sulis, 22, born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, to William H. and Amelia Sulis.

On February 1, 1915, at Salisbury, New Brunswick, Canada, Albert Bentley, 36, re-enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Mabel Albertha Bentley, who resided at 232 Britain Street, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; that his date of birth was January 25, 1877; that he was a solider; that he had previously served in the Canadian Ordinance Corps., and 43rd Regt. Canadian Active Militia. He was described as 5 foot 7 inches in height; dark complexion; blue eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had a mole at the inner end of his right collarbone; a mole on his left shoulder blade; a scar on the inner side of his right arm; and a scar on the inner side of his left elbow.
