On October 25, 1915, Thomas Britton and Alys Hilda Chaplin were married in Brant, Ontario, Canada. Thomas stated that he was 19 years of age; residing in Paris, Ontario, Canada; he was a farmer; Methodist by faith; and his parents names were James Britton and Ann Milburn. Alys, 21, was the daughter of Stanley G. Chaplin and Edith E Newsham, and had been born Devon, England.

On November 15, 1915, Thomas Britton enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared he had been born in Workington, Cumberland, England; that he was a farmer; that he was married; that his next of kin was his wife, Alys Britton, who resided at 28 Bird Avenue, Toronto, Canada; and that his birthdate was October 3, 1896. He was described as 5 foot 7-3/4 inches; fresh complexion; light blue eyes and red hair, and a Methodist by faith. He had a scar on the second finger of his left hand and a scar on his chin.
