He declared that his intended occupation was to do farm work; that he was born in Suffolk, England; that his passage was paid by Dr. Barnardo's Homes; that he was destined to his friend, Mr. J. W. Hobday, 50-52 Peter Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; that his nearest relation was his father, Mr. William Penfold, 5, Oak Terrace, Hawkhurst, Kent, England.

James was first placed with Austin W Walters, Ridgetown, Howard Talbot Road, Kent, Ontario, Canada.

A juvenile inspector reported [T-15425]:

PENFOLD James T., 12 . . . 1921 Barnardo's, 1922-26 with Austin Walters, Ridgetown. Completed. "Progress and character good. No complaints."

On December 21, 1929, James Penfold, 21, farmer, returned to the United Kingdom on the ship Athenia. His destination address was shown to be Pury, Northamptonshire, England. He intended to return to Canada.
