In 1896, Ellen Sheriff, 8 (along with sisters, Julia Sheriff, 13, and Eliza Sheriff, 11) arrived at Quebec, Canada, with a group of 254 Barnardo children accompanied by Mr. Owen, en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In Barnardo's Ups & Downs, April 1, 1900, Volume V, No. 3, under OUR GIRLS, Hazel Brae Notes (pg 75 - 88):

"Julie Sheriff eldest of 3 sisters, came 1896, visited Lizzie & Nellie..."

In 1901, Nellie Sheriff, 14, was shown as a servant to William and Lucy Tordiff in Darlington, Durham, Ontario, Canada. Her date of birth is shown as January 1, 1887, and her immigration year as 1896.

On August 29, 1910, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Nellie Ellen Sherriff, 19, born to Henry Sherriff and Julia Maud Morgan; and Thomas Theodore Furman, 22, comb maker, born to John Furman and Elizabeth Sparrow. Her sister, Elizabeth Sheriff, was a witness to the marriage.

In 1911, Nellie Furman, 20, was shown residing at the home of her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Furman (who was legally separated from her husband), at 485 Richmond, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, along with her husband, Thomas Furman, 23, comb maker. Her date of birth is shown as August 1890, and her immigration year as 1901.

Thomas and Nellie Sheriff Furman had 4 children.
