Notes Alfred John Winterbottom was my grandfather. He was placed in Delaware, Ontario on the farm of Joseph and Mary Howlett. He enlisted for service in World War 1, and served in France for about 2 years.
He married Mignonette (Nettie) Blinkhorn Dec. 3, 1921 and they had 4 daughters, two of whom died as young children. Alfred died in 1936 leaving behind a wife and 2 young children.
I have copies of the file from Barnardos, including pictures of Alfred and one brother, Francis, who was also a Home Child. A third brother, Samuel George was also sent to Canada and was placed in Delaware with Robert Howlett, half-brother to Joseph. Samuel died at age 17 from complications of appendicitis. Francis, the youngest, was placed in Muskoka. His story remains to be explored.
