Johann Heinrich Grandt repeatedly states in Census records that he was born in Wurttemberg. He would have emigrated via the Rhine port of Mannheim. His son George Henry Grant, as head, would have filled out the 1911 Census and possibly wrote down Mannheim. I have visited the Mannheim archives and they have no record of anyone by the name of Grandt. His 1857 marriage record shows address of Queen Street, Derby, and he may have been assisting William HURD. After he left Derby he set up as a sausage maker and sausage skin provider. His premises on Canal Wharf may have been important in that the Chesterfield Canal connected to the Trent navigation system. He had to move when the Canal Wharf was in-filled for the building of the Central Railway. There were several GPBs in Chesterfield including the HAAGS, so he would have been providing sausages skins etc. to other pork butchers. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Spital Cemetery, Chesterfield (Source: Researcher Carol Woodhouse)
