Notes Elizabeth Dorothy - in adulthood known as Dorothy - together with her 4 sisters; Isabella, Margaret, Mary Jane and Frances, were sent to Canada as BHC after the death of their father, Richard CARRUTHERS, and the remarriage of their mother, Jane Routledge Carruthers PRUDEN.
Their one brother, John CARRUTHERS, remained in England but I've been unsuccessful in finding him.
Dorothy was unhappily placed with the BROOME family in Forresters Falls, ON as a domestic. She left the family to live with her sister Isabella, who had been adopted by a family in Quebec (see Isabella CARRUTHERS)
From there, Dorothy moved to Montreal and I find her working as a domestic in the 1901 census.
Dorothy then went into training as a nurse at the Montreal Children's Memorial Hospital and graduated c 1905.
Dorothy married Herbert Beaufield TAIT of Montreal, QC in 1908. Their children, Isobel Dorothy TAIT(1908), Eileen Routledge TAIT(1911), and my father, Robert Gordon TAIT(1914)were all born in Montreal, QC.
Sadly, Herbert TAIT died in 1917 leaving Dorothy with 3 children to raise on her own. My grandfather had been a successful businessman and thus Dorothy was left with some means by which to live fairly comfortably for a time, but this did not last and her skills as a nurse were eventually put to use to sustain her family.
Dorothy died in Montreal, October 19th, 1951.
