NotesIn 1888, Mary Jane Carruthers, 10 (along with her sister, Frances, 9), arrived with a group of 28 males and 33 females of Mrs. Birt's Children at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. From there, they arrived on March 14, 1888, by train at Levis, Quebec, Canada, en route to Acton Vale, Quebec.

William Shell married Jennie Carruthers on December 19, 1894 at the Congregational Church, Melbourne, Quebec, Canada.

The couple and their two children returned to England and lived with Mary Jane's mother, Jane Routledge Carruthers PRUDEN. William Shell also had relatives in England, close to London.
