In 1888, Frances Carruthers, 9 (along with her sister, Mary Jane Carruthers, 10), arrived with a group of 28 males and 33 females of Mrs. Birt's Children at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. From there, they arrived on March 14, 1888, by train at Levis, Quebec, Canada, en route to Acton Vale, Quebec.

In 1893, Frances was placed with the Walling family in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada.

In 1896, at the Baptist Church in Amherst, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada, a marriage was registered between Frances Carruthers, 18, born in Liverpool, England to Richard and Jane Carruthers; and George (Lorrie) Stiles, 20, iron moulder, born in Amherst, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada, to John and Lizzie Stiles.
